Pellet stove servicing and cleaning in Malta

Pellet stoves are now a common way to heat homes in Malta and Gozo, but they need more care than most owners expect. A proper service cleans the parts you cannot reach yourself, so the stove lights first time, burns cleanly and does not shut down halfway through a cold evening.

Also called pellet stove maintenance, pellet stove cleaning, pellet stove service, pellet boiler cleaning.

What's included

  • Burn pot and firebox cleaned and ash removed
  • Heat exchanger and internal passages brushed out
  • Exhaust fan and its housing cleaned
  • Flue pipe swept from the stove to the outlet
  • Door and ash pan seals checked
  • Test run after the service, with notes on anything that needs a technician

Who books it

Before the first fire

A service before winter, so the stove starts reliably on the first cold night.

Mid-season

Heavy users often need a second clean during the winter, when ash builds up quickly.

Stoves that keep shutting down

Ignition failures, smoke smells and error codes are often caused by ash and soot build-up.

Newly bought homes

A stove left by the previous owner should be cleaned and checked before you rely on it.

Why pellet stoves need servicing

A pellet stove burns small amounts of fuel very efficiently, but it still produces ash and fine soot. Over a season these collect in the heat exchanger, the exhaust fan and the flue, where you cannot reach them with a vacuum. Airflow drops, the stove struggles to light, and it can start to smell of smoke or shut itself down.

Most manufacturers recommend a full service at least once a year, and more often for stoves that run every day. Check your stove manual for the exact interval for your model.

What you can do yourself, and what needs a service

Owners can usually empty the burn pot and ash pan and wipe the glass, following the manual. That keeps the stove running day to day.

The heat exchanger, exhaust fan and flue need the stove partly opened up and the right brushes and vacuum. That is what a service covers. Electrical faults, control boards and gas-tightness tests are a job for the stove brand technician, and anything we find that needs one is reported to you.

Pellet quality makes a difference

Cheaper or damp pellets tend to leave more ash and clinker in the burn pot, which means more cleaning and more problems lighting. Storing pellets somewhere dry, off the floor, helps a lot during humid Maltese winters.

Signs your pellet stove needs a service

If you notice any of these, book a clean before you keep using it:

  • The stove fails to light, or takes several attempts
  • It shuts down on its own or shows an error code
  • The flame is lazy, dark orange or sooty instead of bright
  • Glass blackens within hours of cleaning
  • A smell of smoke in the room
  • The fan sounds louder than usual
  • It has been more than a year since the last service

Pellet stove servicing: common questions

How often should a pellet stove be serviced?

At least once a year, usually before winter, and more often if the stove runs every day. Your stove manual will give the interval the manufacturer recommends.

Why does my pellet stove keep shutting down?

A common cause is ash and soot building up in the burn pot, exchanger, exhaust fan or flue, which reduces airflow until the stove safety system stops it. Damp or poor-quality pellets can also cause it. A full clean often fixes it; if not, the fault may need the stove technician.

Do you repair pellet stoves?

The service covers cleaning and checks. Repairs to electronics, motors and control boards should be done by a technician for your stove brand. Anything that needs one is noted and reported to you.

Do you service pellet stoves in Gozo?

Yes. Gozo visits are grouped by area to keep them efficient, so book early in the season and tell us your preferred month.
