More about farmhouses and holiday homes →Why sweeping matters
Burning wood leaves soot and creosote inside the flue. As it builds up it restricts the draught, makes the fire smoky and harder to light, and can catch fire. A blocked flue can also push carbon monoxide back into the room.
A carbon monoxide alarm in any room with a fire or stove is a sensible, inexpensive safeguard alongside regular sweeping.
When to book
The best time is before you start using the fire in autumn, and again during the season if you use it a lot. Demand peaks from October to January, so reserving a month in advance is the surest way to get a slot.
Chimney sweep prices in Malta
Prices are fixed and agreed before the visit. What decides the price:
- Open fireplace, wood-burning stove or pellet stove
- How long since the last sweep, and how heavily the fire is used
- Height and access to the chimney
- Whether a nest or blockage needs clearing
- Location, since Gozo visits are grouped by area

Read the guide →Chimney & stove cleaning: common questions
How often should a chimney or stove be swept?
At least once a year for most wood-burning fires and stoves, ideally before the cold season. If you burn wood most evenings through winter, a second sweep mid-season is a good idea. Pellet stoves also need regular cleaning in between, as set out in the manufacturer’s manual.
How long does a sweep take?
Usually around an hour for a straightforward chimney or stove, longer if the flue is heavily blocked or the stove needs a deeper clean.
Will it be messy?
No. The fireplace is sealed off and dust sheets and an industrial vacuum are used, so soot stays in the flue and the bag.
Do you cover Gozo?
Yes. Gozo has many farmhouses with fireplaces, and Gozo visits are grouped so they can be scheduled efficiently.
Who cleans chimneys in Malta?
Chimney sweeps are hard to find in Malta and Gozo and waiting lists are common in winter. clear.mt arranges chimney and stove cleaning across both islands: send a quote request with your preferred month and we confirm a date.
Why is my fireplace smoking into the room?
The most common causes are a partly blocked or dirty flue, a cold chimney that has not warmed up, wet wood, or not enough air reaching the fire. If it keeps happening, stop using the fire and have the chimney swept and checked.
