Solar panel cleaning in Malta & Gozo

Dust, salt and bird droppings settle on rooftop panels and quietly cut the electricity they produce. A careful clean brings them back to what they should be generating.

Also called PV panel cleaning, photovoltaic panel cleaning, solar panel washing. In Maltese: tindif tal-pannelli solari.

Why dirty panels cost you money

A solar panel can only convert the light that reaches the cells. A film of dust or salt, or a single bird dropping over a cell, reduces output, and that loss repeats every sunny day until the panel is cleaned.

Malta does not get enough rain to keep panels clean, and the rain that does fall often carries Saharan dust that dries into a muddy layer.

How often should solar panels be cleaned in Malta?

Once or twice a year suits most homes, ideally in spring before the long summer days. After a heavy dust episode, or if you live near the coast, fields or a construction site, an extra clean is often worth it. Your inverter or app readings are a good guide: a drop on clear days usually means dirty panels.

Solar panel cleaning prices in Malta

Prices are fixed and agreed before the work starts. What decides the price:

  • Number of panels
  • Roof access: stairs to the roof, a hatch, a ladder, or a raised frame
  • How dirty the panels are, for example after a long gap or heavy bird droppings
  • Whether solar water heaters are cleaned at the same visit
  • Several systems on one roof booked together, which usually lowers the price per home

Solar panel cleaning: common questions

Will cleaning damage my panels or affect my warranty?

Panels are cleaned with soft brushes and suitable water, without pressure washers, abrasive pads or harsh chemicals, in line with common manufacturer guidance. If your installer has specific instructions, share them and we will follow them.

Can I clean them myself?

You can if your roof is safe to work on and the panels are within easy reach. Avoid tap water that leaves limescale spots, and never use abrasive tools. Many people book a professional because of the height and the risk of damaging the glass.

Do you need access to my roof?

Yes. For apartment blocks this usually means arranging access through the block administrator or a neighbour with roof access.

How is the price worked out?

Mainly by the number of panels and how easy the roof is to reach. Tell us roughly how many panels you have and send a photo of the roof if you can.

Does cleaning solar panels really increase output?

If the panels are dirty, yes. Dust, salt and bird droppings block light from reaching the cells, so output drops. Cleaning restores it. How much depends on how dirty they were, so compare your readings on clear days before and after.

Do you offer solar panel maintenance?

Each clean includes a visual check, and anything that needs attention is reported with photos. Electrical repairs to the system itself should be done by your installer.
