The short answer
Between guests, check that glass, sliding doors and balustrades are clean and streak-free, tracks are clear and nothing is left behind. Book professional window cleaning on a schedule that suits your location, every few weeks on the seafront, and clean solar panels once or twice a year. Sweep any stove or fireplace before winter and fit a CO alarm.
Why glass matters for short lets
In Malta and Gozo, many short-let properties sell on light, balconies and sea views. Guests notice dirty glass immediately, it shows in their photos and it can come up in reviews. Your listing photos are also only as good as the windows in them.
The problem is that the same things that make a property attractive, a seafront location, big glass doors, a glass balustrade, are the things that get dirty fastest.
What salt air does to rental windows
Coastal lets in Sliema, St Julian’s, St Paul’s Bay, Marsaskala, Marsalforn and Xlendi face constant salt. It:
- leaves a hazy film on glass within days of cleaning,
- builds up in sliding door tracks and wears the rollers,
- corrodes frames, hinges and balustrade fittings.
See protecting your home from sea salt for the wider picture.
How often to clean the windows
| Location | Professional clean | Between guests |
|---|---|---|
| Directly sea-facing | Monthly, more in summer | Wipe door glass and balustrades |
| Seafront or sea view | Every four to six weeks | Wipe door glass and balustrades |
| Inland | Every two to three months | Spot-clean fingerprints |
Add an extra clean after red rain or a storm. See how often to clean windows in Malta.

Hard water and salt marks
Hard water spots and salt marks on shower screens, balcony glass and doors build up when glass is rinsed with tap water and left to dry. Wipe dry after cleaning and use a squeegee. For marks that have set, see removing hard water stains from glass.
Solar panels on rental roofs
If the property has solar panels, they need cleaning once or twice a year like any other: after the summer and in spring. Dirty panels mean lower output, and in a busy let with air conditioning running, that matters. See the best time of year to clean solar panels.
Fireplaces and stoves
Many farmhouse lets in Gozo have fireplaces or wood burners that guests love in winter. Sweep before the season, in September or October, and leave clear instructions. See how often to sweep a chimney.
When a refresh needs a clear-out
Over time, lets collect broken furniture, old mattresses and things left by guests. Between seasons, a clear-out makes room for new furnishings. See the landlord checklist between tenants and our junk removal service.
