The short answer
A skip suits building waste and jobs where you have help, time and somewhere to put it. A clearance service suits homes with narrow streets, upper floors and steep stairs, where someone needs to carry everything out, sort it and take it away in one visit. Many Maltese jobs fit a clearance service better because a skip is hard to place and still needs filling.
How each one works
Skip hire
You hire a container that is dropped outside your property. You, or people you organise, fill it. The company collects it at the end of the hire and takes the contents away.
Clearance service
A team comes to the property, carries everything out, loads it into their vehicle and takes it away. They sort items as they go, sending what they can for reuse or recycling. You point at what goes.
Where a skip can go in Malta
This is the first practical question. Many Maltese streets are narrow, steep or one-way, with no driveways and parking tight on both sides. A skip:
- needs space on the street or on private ground,
- must not block traffic, pavements or neighbours’ access,
- may need arrangements with the local council if it goes on a public road.
Ask the skip company and your council what applies where you live. We do not give guidance on permits.
In village cores, old town centres and apartment blocks on busy roads, there may simply be nowhere to put one.
Staircases change everything
Maltese homes are vertical. Townhouses have steep, narrow stone staircases. Apartments may have a small lift, or none. Roof washrooms are often up a final flight with a tight turn.
With a skip, someone still has to carry every sofa, wardrobe, mattress and box down those stairs and into the skip. That is heavy, slow work, and it is where people get hurt.
A clearance team does the carrying. They are used to Maltese staircases, dismantle furniture when it will not turn a corner and protect walls and floors as they go.
What each will take
| Skip | Clearance service | |
|---|---|---|
| Building rubble and soil | Yes, often the main use | Sometimes, ask first |
| Furniture | Yes, if you can load it | Yes |
| Mattresses | Ask the company | Yes |
| Appliances | Often restricted | Usually yes |
| Boxes and general clutter | Yes | Yes |
| Hazardous waste, cylinders | No | Separate handling, ask first |
| Sorting for reuse and recycling | No | Usually yes |
For items that need separate routes, see hazardous household waste, disposing of old appliances and how to dispose of a mattress.
Timing
- Skip: it sits outside for the hire period while you fill it. Neighbours may add to it.
- Clearance service: usually done in one visit, often in a few hours for a flat or small house.
Which do you actually need?
A skip suits you if:
- the waste is mostly rubble, tiles, plaster or garden waste from a renovation,
- there is a safe place to put it,
- you have people and time to fill it,
- most items are on the ground floor or close to the street.
A clearance service suits you if:
- the property is upstairs, in a narrow street or has steep stairs,
- the items are furniture, appliances, mattresses and general contents,
- you want items sorted for reuse and recycling,
- you are short of time, help or both,
- you are clearing for a sale, a new tenant or after a bereavement.
Some jobs need both: a skip for the builders’ rubble and a clearance team for the contents. See cleaning after building work for what comes after.
